I'm like you; I've only read 10. 'I, Claudius' was sitting around the house for a long time years ago, and I always meant to read it, but I've not seen it for a long time. I expect it was given away.

I agree that many of the books were on the depressing side. I never read 'Brideshead Revisited', but I tried three times to watch the drama on TV, and never got very far with it!

I enjoyed 'Possession'; didn't want to put it down, but though I liked 'The Lion and the Wardrobe' as a child, I soured a bit when I grew older. I'm warming to it again, but not as much as before. I was watching one of those Narnia films and couldn't help laughing when Lucy said to her companions, "will you please all stop pretending to be grown-ups!" I'd been thinking something similar. Gah.

I'm glad 'The Lord of the Rings' is on the list, though it's by no means perfect. I suspect most of the books I like are too lightweight to make it. The Moomins would be on a Top 100 Children's Classics if I had my way! And 'Anne of Green Gables'. And 'What Katy Did'.

We used to use electric blankets every winter, but I haven't needed mine since I moved back to Mum's. I thought it was because it always seems hotter upstairs than downstairs, and as Mum sleeps downstairs, she needs a reasonable amount of heat (which means I'll be a little bit too hot).

But she pointed out that we had both bought those memory foam mattress toppers (they were on sale so we didn't have to pay full price), and they do a lot to cut out the chill. I hadn't thought of that, but she could be right. It's a long time since I've had that 'ice-cold mattress' feeling. There's nothing like an ice-cold mattress to make me reach for the electric blanket switch!

I often feel like that about films these days; I think they drag the sad and sentimental moments out far too long. It makes you think twice about watching it with someone else there. And even without that, sometimes you feel like throwing tomatoes at the TV! Oh well.

I am not suprised you are complaining about the christmas do, its a crappy idea really. A couple of us tried to get a dialogue going about it today but didn't get very far (amongst the original organisers). So I don't know, I don't really care anymore. Some one made the comment that our suggestions meant kids couldnt come along. Well hello its not their firking xmas party its ours.

I can sympathise about the cold/hot thing too. I even have my electric blanket on to take the chill off when I got to bed, that gets turned off, and then later in the night its too hot. Heaters on again tonight!

Whereas I need the pressure of a set date to make me sit down and write. Otherwise I'll do what most of the others have and not bother! I figure if I'm not enjoying the experience I should withdraw from the blog which is what I've said to the administrator a couple of times but he keeps encouraging me. I'll see how I go...

I like the idea of a free for all instead of set days because if anyone is like me i never know whats going to happen the next day...my plans change all the time, depending on who needs what and when :-)

I have to agree that the earlier Diana Gabaldon books are well worth it. I got turned off her later writing by the wordy, much-ado-about-nothing Fiery Cross. I still haven't read the sequel even though I bought it (on special).

Of the books in that list I've read:
- Animal Farm, Catcher in the Ryer (at school but enjoyed them as i recall)
- Blind Assassin (fantastic)
- Golden Notebook (yawn, never finished it)
- The Lion the witch and the wardrobe (loved it)
- On the road (not a bad read, but am far more interested in the lives of the Beat authors than their works!)
- Possession (gave up)
- Tropic of Cancer (mysoginistic tripe)
- White teeth (great read)

I saw a TV adaption of The Wide Sargasso Sea and enjoyed that, so I am planning to read this, and the book that inspired it, Jane Eyre.

As for my own top 100, that's tricky. Everything by Margaret Atwood for starters. At least two novels by Luke Davies: Candy and Isabelle the Navigator. The Twilight series has to be there too ;-) The earlier books in Diana Gabaldon's Outlander serries. The undomestic goddess by Sophie Kinsella (v funny) While i was gone by Sue Miller. All of the Jackson Brodie novels by Kate Atkinson.

Ok had better stop now as I might list 100 :-) :-)

It can be a pretty odd place at times - I am still staggered by certain individuals who don't even acknowledge your existence when you pass them as you go about your workday. I now just ignore those people too, I simply can't be bothered.
